Implant Dentistry from Oak Lawn Smiles
There are many things that can make people feel insecure about their smile, such as tooth staining, discoloration, dullness, and chipped or missing teeth. Missing teeth are particularly noticeable and may make some people feel insecure enough to avoid smiling. Missing or loose teeth can also make it more difficult to laugh, speak, chew, and live confidently.
At Oak Lawn Smiles Family Dentistry, we provide cosmetic dental procedures that restore beauty and functionality to patients’ smiles after tooth loss.
Dental Implants and How They Work
Dental implants are a permanent solution to missing teeth that actually involves inserting an implant into the jaw bone, which will mimic the root structure of a tooth.
A standard dental implant has three parts: a titanium implant, an abutment, and a crown. The implant itself is inserted into the jawbone, then the titanium rod is attached to an abutment (or connection point) and a dental crown is attached to the top of the abutment.
The Benefits of Dental Implants
For many people, implants provide a perfect solution to missing teeth. There are many bonuses to choosing dental implants over (or in combination with) other restorative procedures. Dental implants offer:
-
A Permanent Solution – Dental implantation is an irreversible procedure. Even if the crown becomes damaged, the implant will remain and a new crown can be attached.
-
Improved Overall Health – Dental implants can help reduce your risk of periodontal (gum) disease, which is known to cause heart attacks, strokes, worsen diabetes, and lead to other serious conditions.
-
Restored Functionality – With a dental implant, patients can enjoy all of their favorite foods, including foods like steak, apples, and corn on the cob, without worrying about damaging a compromised tooth.
-
Natural Appearance – Dental implants look just like natural teeth, which means they will blend in with the rest of your smile.
-
Simple Care Regimen – Dental implants require a simple care regimen, including twice-daily brushing, daily flossing, and biannual visits to the dentist, just like ordinary, healthy teeth.
-
Solid and Non-Removable – Many people with dentures struggle to keep them in place and occasionally lose track of them entirely; implants are not removable.
The Process
The Consultation
First, patients visit our dental office for a consultation before being approved for an implant. Patients will discuss their dental health with our team, have x-rays taken, and receive a complete oral exam during the consultation.
The Implant and Abutment
The implant procedure involves minor gum surgery, during which the dentist will use a specialized tool to create a channel for the implant to be anchored into the jaw bone. It can take three or more weeks for the surgery site to fully heal, and four to six months for the bone to completely heal around the implant.
When the bone and gum tissue have healed, the patient will return for a minor follow-up procedure to place the abutment. Typically, the dentist will be able to take impressions of the site and begin fabricating a dental crown the same day.
Placing The Crown
Once our team has received the final restoration from the dental lab, we will check the fit and screw the crown into place atop the abutment.
Some patients experience an adjustment period as their gums and jaw get used to the sensations of eating and speaking with their new implant, but the benefits of a dental implant procedure far outweigh the costs.
Determining Your Candidacy
How Long Do Dental Implants Last
The different components of a dental implant have different lifespans. The titanium implant can last a lifetime with proper care. The dental crown, however, will usually only last 10-15 years.
The best way to maximize the lifespan of your implant is to brush and floss daily, and visit your dentist at least twice a year for check-ups. When the crown needs to be replaced, it is typically a simple and pain free process.
Caring for A Dental Implant
Just like natural teeth, dental implants require brushing (twice per day), flossing (at least once per day), and regular visits to the dental office for exams and teeth cleanings. Additionally, a person with dental implants should consider using a soft-bristle toothbrush to help keep their crown in the best condition possible, and a night guard to offer protection against teeth grinding.
Are Dental Implants Covered by Insurance
The answer to this question will vary depending on the type of insurance you have. Dental implants have been a gold standard of dental care for many decades, and insurance companies are slowly catching on to their essential benefits. If you are considering dental implants, it is best to review your insurance policy and reach out to the company for clarification.
